PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - Pending the outcome of the official state canvass on Nov. 12, South Dakota's House of Representatives will contain 46 Republicans and 24 Democrats. That's a gain of 4 for the minority party.

Under legislative rules, a two-thirds majority -- 47 -- wields almost unbridled power. Republicans have had that for several years.

Recounts are possible in three state Senate races and two House races, all within the 2% margin that allows losing candidates to request recounts.

But Secretary of State Chris Nelson says none of those contests are within the usual dozen or two votes that could result in successful recount challenges.

Democrats say they were especially disappointed that state Representative Dale Hargens of Miller, the House Democratic leader, failed in his attempt to switch to the Senate.
