CEDAR RAPIDS -- Emmetsburg kicker Matt Wellick broke the deadlock with 41 seconds remaining in the first half to give his team a 3-0 halftime lead over West Lyon in the Iowa Class 1A state championship game at the UNI Dome.

Things could be worse for West Lyon.

The Wildcats, 12- 1 entering the game, recovered an Emmetsburg fumble deep in their own territory with 11:06 remaining in the second quarter.
