SALIX, Iowa -- South Sioux City Councilman Oscar Gomez, 33, was seriously injured and another man, Bruce Wright, is still missing after both were ejected from the boat they were riding in Saturday evening. The incident occurred on the Missouri River, about a mile north of Salix.
Kevin Baskins, Iowa Department of Natural Resources public information officer, said that about a dozen boats were on the river Sunday afternoon as U.S. Coast Guard and IDNR personnel, joined by a number of volunteers, search for Wright, 31, also of South Sioux City, after a fruitless search was called off at dark on Saturday.
Gomez's cousin, Samuel Gomez, 32, of Jackson, Neb., was driving the boat, Baskins said. He said Wright and Gomez were reportedly thrown from the vessel when Samuel Gomez slowed down suddenly while the two passengers were in the bow of the boat. Samuel Gomez was charged with boating while intoxicated.
Oscar Gomez was helped back into the boat by other boaters in the area, but they couldn't locate Wright. According to the IDNR, Gomez suffered propeller cuts to his right leg and an injury to his left hip. He was airlifted Saturday night to Mercy Medical Center -- Sioux City. A nursing supervisor for Mercy said Sunday afternoon that Gomez had asked that his condition not be released.
