CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) - Leaders of an effort to save Northern Iowa's baseball program say it has failed.
Doug Gross is a Des Moines attorney who represented a group of baseball supporters in discussions with school officials over the past several weeks. He said Wednesday that it appears school officials will get rid of the baseball program.
Baseball coach Rick Heller criticized Athletic Director Troy Dannen and other school officials for their refusal to save the team. He says he's disappointed they couldn't find $100,000 in scholarship money to retain a program that has been around for 103 years.
Dannen says the school didn't receive an acceptable plan for financing. He says he has no plans to rescind a February decision to call the program quits at the end of the season.
