REMSEN, Iowa -- How fit is Donny Osmond?
"He could crank out 100 push-ups at the drop of a hat right now," says Adam Gentz, a native of Remsen, Iowa, who serves as the entertainer's personal trainer during his run on ABC's popular "Dancing With the Stars" show.
"I'm training him as intensely as I would any professional athlete," Gentz adds.
Osmond made it through three dance routines for Monday's broadcast, the first time the show required celebrity dancers to complete a trio of dances. Osmond, 51, may have Gentz to thank for getting through the night and into the finals which air at 7 p.m. Monday on KCAU-TV.
"I told people the day he began training that he'd be the next champion," says Gentz. "He's an extremely likable guy who is working extremely hard."
The entertainer's body fat registers 12 percent, Gentz says.
How did the two meet? It begins with Gentz's trek to Las Vegas, Nev. The 1993 Remsen St. Mary's High School grad took his ball and glove to St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa, where he played baseball for the Fighting Bees and studied athletic training. Five years later he had a masters in exercise and sports science/human performance from the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse.
"I finished my masters in the summer of 1998 and best job offer I had was to be an athletic trainer at Green Valley High School in Las Vegas," he says.
He's been in Vegas ever since. While at Green Valley, he moonlighted as a trainer at Club Sport Green Valley, a high-end health club. One of his first clients was Gamal Aziz, senior vice president at The Bellagio, a 30-story luxury hotel/casino in Las Vegas.
Aziz referred his friends to Gentz, whose list of clients snowballed in the desert, allowing him to resign from his school position and start his own business, 5 Star Fitness.
Client Don Marrandino, president at Harrah's and The Flamingo, both of Las Vegas, introduced Osmond to his personal trainer earlier this year. Osmond, who has a successful Vegas show, told Gentz he had a possible "Dancing With the Stars" gig in the works.
"We began our training regimen a year ago and kicked it into overdrive when 'Dancing With the Stars' was made official," Gentz says.
Osmond now trains under Gentz's guide one to three times weekly. The former Osmond Brothers star does five Las Vegas shows Wednesday through Saturday and flies to Los Angeles for "Dancing" work each Monday and Tuesday.
"Our whole focus through training in the last year was on core balance, explosive plyometrics and footwork," says Gentz. "I wanted Donny to be able to move in multiple planes and look sharp on stage. I had no doubt he'd get through."
The persona that comes through on TV, Gentz says, is the person lifting, stretching and sweating through 5 Star Fitness workouts.
"There is not one ounce of pretentiousness in him," Gentz says of Osmond.
While Osmond's work has directed Gentz's eyes toward dance, it hasn't made the trainer a dancer. Not yet anyway.
"I don't dance," says Gentz, 35. "I was always a good athlete and our head coach at St. Ambrose conditioned the hell out of us. But, no, I'm the polar opposite of dancing."
