SIOUX CITY -- The seventh annual Siouxland Lewis & Clark Marathon generated an estimated $197,058 in local economic impact, Corey Westra, president of the Sioux City Sports Authority, announced Wednesday.
The marathon, featuring 764 runners, was held Oct. 17. Westra said half the runners, or 382, came from out of town and spent two days in Sioux City, spending an average of $257.93 per day. That figure is from the Iowa State Tourism Office, which calculates the average daily impact of visitors to Iowa communities per day's stay, he explained.
"The Siouxland Marathon grew by over 200 runners this year, which is phenomenal," he said. "The Sioux City Sports Authority added funding to the event this year for organizers to go out and attract more runners into Sioux City, and that proved to be a great success."
He and race director Steve Uhl also credited Missouri River Historical Development Inc. and major sponsors Scheels and New Balance for helping to market the event.
