HINTON, Iowa - A Northwest Iowa man was flown by helicopter to a Sioux City hospital after his car collided with a tractor-trailer rig tonight in Hinton, police say.

Plymouth County Sheriff Mike Van Otterloo said the accident happened about 5 p.m. at the corner of Highway 75 and Cedar Street.

According to a sheriff's office statement, Jonathon James Learing was making a left turn in his Toyota Camry onto Highway 75 when he was hit by a 1998 Volvo tractor-trailer rig.

Learing was flown by helicopter to Mercy Medical Center -- Sioux City for treatment of what police described as life-threatening injuries. However, a hospital official said she could not release any information about Learing's condition tonight at the request of his family.

The truck driver, James Joseph Pottebaum, of Hospers, was not injured in the accident. The tractor trailer rig was owned by Northwest Express, of Hospers, and appeared to be pulling a load of hogs.
