SIOUX CITY -- The Siouxland Historical Railroad Association will celebrate the 100th birthday of Ironhorse 1355 with cake and a celebration Saturday at the Milwaukee Railroad Shops Historic District, 3400 Sioux River Road.
The birthday party, which begins at 1 p.m., will include Mayor Pro Tem Jim Rixner and restoration volunteers unveiling a plaque that acknowledges the steam locomotive's addition to the National Register of Historic Places. The free event will also include the release of a new T-shirt with a graphic of the locomotive in its heritage colors.
The locomotive will be pulled from the roundhouse about 12:30 p.m. for outdoor exhibition and photo opportunities, weather permitting. Owners of vintage cars are encouraged to bring their autos for public display around the turntable with the locomotive.
The locomotive was built in 1909 and enjoyed a long career pulling the named trains of the Great Northern Railway, including the Oriental Limited and Pacific Fast Mail.
