YORK, Neb. -- Briar Cliff connected on 11 of 23 tries from three-point range Tuesday night and fended off York College 87-82 in men's college basketball action.

Sophomore point guard Mo Smeader tallied 18 points to lead five double-figure scorers for the Chargers of Coach Todd Barry, improving to 4-0 on the young season.

Briar Cliff, ranked 13th in the NAIA Division II preseason poll, also got 17 points each from Chase Vander Feen and Kyle Swanson, making his first start at center.

Kyle Semprini added 11 points and freshman Cory Hollamon, Smeader's backup at point guard, came off the bench to add 10.

York, now 2-3, improved considerably on a 109-66 loss when the teams met last season at BC's Newman Flanagan Center. However, BC still leads the all-time series by a 5-0 margin.

Justice Nall led the hosts with 21 points while Nick Youmans came off the bench to add 20. York also got 16 points from Corey Standerfer and 10 assists from Dee Ellison.

Briar Cliff, which held a scant 37-36 lead at halftime, took advantage of a 35-23 rebounding advantage as Semprini led the way with nine boards.

Briar Cliff returns home for two games this weekend, hosting Clarke at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Ashford at 4 p.m. Saturday.
