VERMILLION, S.D. -- Seven Coyotes scored in double figures as the University of South Dakota men’s basketball team rolled to a 99-67 win over Mayville State Friday night at the DakotaDome. The win moved USD to 2-2 on the season and dropped the Comets to 4-5
Tyler Cain paced a balanced Coyote attack with 18 points. Steve Smith and Mitchell Bouie added 16 points apiece, while Louie Krogman had 14. Jake Thomas posted 12 points and Sioux City East grad Roman Gentry and Kendall Cutler adding 10 each.
USD jumped out to an 11-4 lead as Cain had seven points, while Smith and Gentry had two each. After a Mayville 3-pointer, Jordan Boots -- a redshirt freshman from Vermillion -- drained a three-pointer to push the lead back to 14-7. A three-pointer by Krogman pushed the Coyote lead to 22-12 with about nine minutes left in the first half. USD had a big advantage inside, as Smith and Cain combined for 14 of USD’s first 19 points.
The Coyotes led by as many as 16 in the first half, at 31-15, after a layup by Cutler. Mayville State cut the gap to 10 at halftime with a late three-pointer, but the Coyotes still held a 41-31 lead at the break, thanks to 46.2 percent shooting from the field.
Early in the second half, the Comets cut the gap to 49-44 on a Marcus Carson three-pointer. From there, USD went on a 23-9 run to push the lead to 72-53, with Thomas draining four 3-pointers during that run. A Smith layup at the 8:10 mark pushed the USD lead to 76-55, and from there, the Coyotes rolled.
Cain and Bouie paced USD with eight rebounds each, while Thomas and Cain had five assists. Cain had three blocks, while Thomas had four steals. USD shot 62.9 percent in the second half and finished the game at 55.7 percent shooting from the field.
The Coyotes next play on 7 p.m. Tuesday at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisc.
