WAYNE, Neb. -- Wayne State College's women's cross country team posted their best-ever finish at the NCAA Divsion II Central Regional Championships, taking ninth at the 22-team meet contested Saturday at the Wayne Country Club.
Wayne State, led by Megan Zavorka's 23rd-place time of 22:53.5, finished with a team score of 265 points. Adams State outscored Western State 36-88 to win the title while rounding off the list of other national-qualifying teams were Augustana (90), Mary (169), Metro State (175) and Minnesota-Duluth (179).
The top two individuals from non-qualifying teams that also advanced to the national championships were Sydney Laws of Colorado Mines, fourth overall in 22:06 and Minnesota State's Ali Paul (6th, 22:20).
Sarah Thomsen placed 43rd for the Wildcats in 23:27.6. Wayne State was also represented at the meet by Ky'Lee Engelken (54th, 23:52.4), Molly Gibson (67th, 24:12.8), Melissa McIntosh (78th, 24:34.6), Jenna McCoy (129th, 26:56.9) and Meghan Jacob (143rd, 28:58.0).
Wayne State's men placed 15th out of the 18 teams with 458 points. Adams State outscored Western State 20-47 for the title while Colorado Mines (100), Metro State (142), Augustana (143) and Fort Lewis (192) also advanced to the national meet, which will be held Nov. 21st at Evansville, Ind.
The top two individuals from non-qualifying that also advanced to the national meet were Niciase Kazingo of New Mexico Highlands (7th, 31:41) and Tanner Fruit of Nebraska-Kearney (16th, 32:28).
York Thomas led Wayne State with a 42nd-place time of 33:44.5. The Wildcats were also represented by Matt Seiler (85th, 35:30.0), John Kern (106th, 36:54.4), Trevor Urkoski (111th, 37:21.6) and Jason Schaaf (114th, 37:41.6).
The meet concluded the season for Wayne State's cross country teams.
