CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) -- Jake Waters' second state title as a quarterback came a whole lot easier than the first.

Waters scored three touchdowns and Jake Gentile ran for two more Saturday to lead Council Bluff St. Albert to a 35-0 victory Calmar South Winneshiek and the Class 1A state championship

Capping a 14-0 season, the Falcons captured their third title in four years and fourth since 2004

Waters was the starting quarterback on St. Albert's 2007 championship team, which had to make several huge defensive stops to hold off Iowa City Regina 7-6. The Falcons played solid defense again Saturday, holding South Winneshiek (12-2) to 43 yards in the first half and 191 for the game.

Also a standout in basketball and baseball, Waters finished with 63 yards rushing in 20 carries and completed 10 of 16 passes for 96 yards.

Gentile ran 12 times for 133 yards, scoring on runs of 11 and 8 yards. He also returned a punt 30 yards to set up Waters' first touchdown.

St. Albert's defense was so stout and swift that South Winneshiek could barely run a play for positive yardage in the opening half. After its first six possessions, the Warriors had no first downs and only 17 total yards.

Gentile set the Falcons up nicely after their first defensive stop, returning a punt 30 yards to the South Winneshiek 28. Six plays later, Waters scrambled when he couldn't find a receiver open, slipped out of a defender's grasp to avoid a sack and beat the pursuit to the left pylon for an 11-yard touchdown run.Mickey Russell's interception of Jared Holien's wobbly pass set up Gentile's 11-yard touchdown run that made it 14-0. When Waters' scored on his 1-yard sneak in the second quarter, his line's surge was so strong that he went in standing up.

Harlan 35, Pella 14

Brian Kloewer and Dylan Barrett each scored two touchdowns and Harlan overwhelmed Pella 35-14 Saturday to win its 12th Class 3A state championship.

It was one final dominating performance by a team that was challenged only twice this season while rolling to a 14-0 record. The Cyclones piled up 479 yards and led 35-0 before the Dutch scored midway through the fourth quarter.

Pella (10-4) had won seven straight after a 3-3 start and knocked off four ranked teams to reach the title game. But once Harlan got rolling, the Dutch had no chance, and the Cyclones gave coach Curt Bladt his 11th state title.

Bladt was an assistant coach when Harlan won its first championship in 1972.

Harlan was at its best in the second quarter, when the Cyclones scored four touchdowns and amassed 233 yards in taking a 28-0 halftime lead. Pella's numbers for that quarter: No first downs and minus-3 yards.

Matt Hoch, Harlan's 6-foot-4, 245-pound fullback, churned out 111 yards and 10 carries and usually dragged two or three defenders with him before going down. Hoch, also a standout defensive tackle, will play at Iowa next fall.

Pella avoided a shutout when Brett Bogaard scored on a 2-yard run with 6:58 left. Blaine Forsythe's 44-yard pass to Josh Pringle set up the touchdown, which came when Harlan had several reserves playing defense.

The Dutch recovered an onside kick after the touchdown and scored again, Forsythe hitting Pringle from 10 yards out for the TD.

Harlan's only close games this season both were against Sioux City Heelan, a 24-6 victory in the regular season and a 21-14 win in the playoff quarterfinals.
