CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Stephan Vigier has been due for a game like this.
The 5-9, 160-pound forward from the Sioux City Musketeers scored two goals in the second period Friday night while leading Coach Luke Strand's squad to their third straight victory, 3-0 in United States Hockey League action over the East Division-leading Cedar Rapids RoughRiders at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.
Vigier, the team's captain, has scored three goals in the last two games for a suddenly-surging Sioux City squad that has defeated opponents in the last two games that have combined for 19 wins. A year ago, in his rookie season, Vigier was the Musketeers' second-leading scorer with 48 points (15 goals, 33 assists) and entered the current campaign as the team's top returning scorer.
Overall, Vigier has recorded five goals and two assists in the last seven games for Sioux City, now 6-8-1. His first goal was unassisted and it came at the 7:02 mark, 40 seconds following Darik Angeli's second goal of the season.
Vigier, who scored a power-play goal in a 3-1 loss to the RoughRiders on Oct. 9 at the Tyson Events Center, became the third Musketeer to record a two-goal game this season when he scored on assists from Adam Schmidt and Billy Latta at the 18:12 mark.
Clinton Bourbonais had two goals for Sioux City in a 4-2 win over Team USA on Oct. 16 at Ann Arbor, Mich. Schmidt tallied two goals in a 7-3 loss at Sioux Falls on Halloween.
Two of Sioux City's last three wins have been on the road, where it's 4-2 this season. The Musketeers are 2-6-1 at home, but have turned in three points at the Tyson Events Center in the last two games, dating back to a 4-3 shootout loss to West Division-leading Omaha on Nov. 7.
Interestingly enough, Cedar Rapids (9-6-1) has had the same kind of luck. The RoughRiders are 3-5 at home and 6-1-1 away from their ice.
Winning goalkeeper Will Yanakeff (4-3) stopped his first 13 shots before yielding an Eric Robinson goal, two minutes into the third period. Yanakeff, the Musketeers' first-round draft choice, stopped 24 of the 25 shots he faced.
Tonight, Sioux City will host Youngstown (8-6-1) starting at 7 p.m. The expansion squad from Ohio fell 3-0 at Sioux Falls Friday night.
