SIOUX FALLS -- The Sioux City Musketeers have plenty to be thankful for.
For starters, Thursday night's 3-2 shootout win over Sioux Falls marked the sixth consecutive victory for Coach Luke Strand's squad. Dan Ford, Danny Wurden and Tommy Olczyk breezed shots past losing goaltender Limo Chimienti as the Musketeers won by shootout for the second consecutive night in front of 3,258 fans in United States Hockey League action at the Sioux Falls Arena.
Here's another thing to consider following the Thankgiving victory. Sioux City (9-8-1) now has seven days off before Nov. 4-5 games at Fargo. It'll mark the first meeting against the Force, a second-year club that fell to Indiana in last year's Clark Cup championship series.
Incidentally, the Musketeers have now leaped past Fargo for third place in the USHL West Division with 19 points, one point ahead of Fargo (9-7-0), which will host the struggling Tri-City Storm (7-7-3) tonight. The Musketeers handed Tri-City its eighth straight loss Wednesday night, 5-4 in a shootout at the Viaero Event Center (see page B3).
Sioux City (9-8-1) squared the season series with Sioux Falls at two games apiece. The last two wins over Sioux Falls have been by shootout.
Coincidentally, both shootout victories against Sioux Falls ended the same for Sioux City with Olczyk taking the last shot. Chimienti, who entered Thursday night's game with a 5-0-2 record and a sparkling 1.81 goals-against average, was the losing goalkeeper as well in a 4-3 shootout on Nov. 17 at the Tyson Events Center.
Olcyzk also took the last shot in a 4-3 shootout win at Des Moines on Nov. 14.
Sioux City rallied from a 1-0 deficit to outshoot Sioux Falls 14-5 in the first nine minutes of the third period, getting goals from Darik Angeli and Adam Schmidt.
Schmidt, who has two goals and five assists in the winning streak, tallied his fourth goal of the season on the assist from Ryan Kesti with 7:24 left in the third period. Schmidt had two goals in a 7-3 loss to the Stampede on Oct. 31 and now has four goals and 10 assists for 14 points, one point behind leading scorer Stephan Vigier (10 goals, 5 assists) who was held scoreless for the first time in the winning streak.
Sioux Falls (10-2-5) sent the game into overtime as Michael Voran sneaked a shot past Matt Skoff with 2:22 left in regulation. Voran had scored one goal in each of the last three games against the Musketeers this season.
Skoff (4-5-1), who played in the nets for the second straight night, stopped three of the four shots he faced in the shootout, including an offering from Matt Bailey, who's tied with Voran for the team lead with 19 goals. Bailey's miss came after Ford's connection.
