SIOUX FALLS -- There were a lot of crazy hockey games between the Sioux City Musketeeers and the Sioux Falls Stampede a year ago.
Saturday night's United States Hockey League game showed that the trend will continue this season.
Sioux Falls scored three unanswered goals in the third period to take a 7-3 win over Coach Luke Strand's squad at the Sioux Falls Arena. Matt Bailey, the Stampede's leading scorer this season with 11 points (6 goals, 5 assists), recorded two goals and an assist for a 6-1-2 squad that remained in second place in the USHL West Division with 14 points, two behind Omaha (8-1), which was idle.
Sioux City (3-6), which entered the game as the league's lowest-scoring team, was coming off a 3-0 loss on Friday night to Green Bay at the Tyson Events Center. In that contest, the Musketeers set a league record for the fewest shots taken in a game, getting only 11 shots against Gamblers goaltender Steve Summerhays.
Sioux City had 12 shots in the second period alone and was outshot by just a 28-24 count.
Sioux City didn't go up against Sioux Falls goalie Lino Chimienti, who has a sparkling 4-0 record with a 1.50 goals-against average. Clay Witt, the winning goaltender in a 3-1 decision at the Tyson Events Center on Oct. 10, saw his GAA slip to a still-respectable 2.52, even after the damage that the Musketeers did in the second period.
Adam Schmidt became the second Musketeer this season to get two goals in a game. Schmidt joined Clinton Bourbonais, who tallied two goals in a 4-2 win over Team USA on Oct. 16 at the Ann Arbor (Mich.) Ice Cube.
Sioux City trailed 4-0 when Schmidt scored on Dan Ford's assist at the 5:17 mark. Seven minutes later, Schmidt tallied his second goal of the season, a power-play shot that was assisted by Tommy Olczyk and Stephan Vigier.
Vigier, who had been scoreless in his previous two starts, added another power-play goal to lift the Musketeers within 4-3. Olczyk and Matt Paape recorded assists on just the second goal of the season for Vigier.
Bailey's second goal of the game, however, launched a 3-0 run in the third period for the Stampede.
Sioux City will return to the home ice on Thursday, where it will face defending Clark Cup champion Indiana, starting at 7 p.m.
