COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa -- Shelby Houlihan, a junior from the East girls cross country team, captured her third career Class 4A regional championship Monday.

Houlihan, who's ranked third in 4A by the Iowa Association of Track Coaches (IATC), topped a team that qualified for state, tallying 75 points in a meet hosted by Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln. Houlihan ran away with the victory, timed in 15:15.93 and finished well ahead of the runner-up, Urbandale's Sammi Bruett (15:51.14).

The girls regional/boys district, hosted by Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln, was originally scheduled for last Thursday, but postponed because of cold and rainy weather. District/regionals at Spencer (Class 3A), Sheldon (Class 2A) and Holstein (Class 1A) were also postponed because of similar conditions and rescheduled for Monday.

Kennedy Park of Fort Dodge will host the state meet Saturday. Houlihan has placed third in each of her two previous 4A state appearances at Kennedy Park in Fort Dodge.

In her freshman year, Dowling Catholic's Katie Flood took first and Ashlie Decker placed second. A year ago at state, Decker took first and Flood was second.

Houlihan raced against Flood and Decker on Sept. 26 at the Roy Griak Invitational held at the University of Minnesota. There, competing on a 5-kilometer course, Flood was first (18:06.6), Decker took second (18:06.8) and Houlihan was third (18:51.9).
