SIOUX CITY – Tommy Olczyk can’t believe his luck.
For the second time in the last two games, Olczyk scored the game-winning goal in a shootout. The son of former NHL forward Eddie Olczyk Sr. flicked the puck past Lino Chimienti to give the Sioux City Musketeers a 4-3 shootout victory over the Sioux Falls Stampede Tuesday night in United States Hockey League action at the Tyson Events Center.
“It’s unreal,” said Olczyk, whose father scored 342 goals and had 794 points in 1,031 NHL games in 16 seasons for six teams, including the Chicago Blackhawks, who drafted him in 1984.
“I feel great doing it. I did it Saturday in the win over Des Moines, and this one against Sioux Falls, well, they’re our rival. I’m glad I can be a part of it.”
Sioux City (5-8-1) picked up its second straight victory and tallied its first win in three games against Sioux Falls (9-1-4) this season. Winning goalkeeper Will Yanakeff, the Musketeers’ first-round draft pick, recorded 28 saves in the game and stopped four of the Stampede’s five scorers in the shootout.
The shootout was basically the same scenario for Olczyk, a 5-9, 180-pound forward from Long Grove, Ill.
Defenseman Dan Ford, who scored ahead of Olczyk in Saturday night’s 4-3 shootout victory over Des Moines, did it again Tuesday night, the first player to score a goal in the session following the overtime period as teammates Stephan Vigier and Billy Latta were unable to score off Chimienti, who entered the game with a 5-0-1 record, a sparkling 1.64 goals-against average and a .926 save percentage.
Sioux Falls, which entered the game with wins in five of its previous six games, responded as Matt Bailey, the club’s leading scorer with 17 points (7 goals, 10 assists) got a shot past Musketeers goaltender Will Yanakeff, who incidentally, was starting for the second straight game.
Olczyk has converted on five of seven shootout chances in his three seasons with Sioux City.
“It takes a lot of practice and I have trouble doing it in practice because we have two good goaltenders,” said Olczyk. “You need to have a good read on the goalkeeper and you need a good go-to move. Sometimes, you might need to change, so you need to be flexible.
“Will made some unbelievable saves. Will was great between the pipes tonight and we played well as a team.”
“You have to credit Will for rebounding from allowing that late goal (in the third period),” said Musketeers Coach Luke Strand. “That goal he allowed wasn’t his fault. All good goalies are expected to make saves. But he found a way to respond and do some good things.”
Sioux City snapped a 2-2 tie when one of the USHL’s youngest players, 15-year old Richard Zehnal, scored 2.5 minutes into the third period. It was the first goal of the season for the 6-foot, 200-pound forward from the Czech Republic, who came to the Musketeers late in training camp, arriving just in time to play in the USHL Fall Classic, held in late September at the Tyson Events Center.
Sioux Falls, the league’s third-leading scoring team with 57 goals, tied the game with 2:10 left in regulation on Chad Ruhwedel’s shorthanded goal.
“This was a good game for us,” said Strand. “We played hard. We got the first two goals in the game (goals from Vigier and Olczyk in the first period). It’s just a matter of learning how to play for 60 minutes.”
The Musketeers will play at Cedar Rapids Friday night. Saturday, Sioux City will host Youngstown (Ohio).
